My name is Paul Cowan and I’m a woodturner from Humble Texas. I started woodturning after I retired from a career in software development. I built my shop and started turning in 2019. Early on I found a book about segmented turning by Malcom Tibbetts and I was fascinated by the beauty and complexity of his segmented pieces. I made a few of the pieces from the book and I was hooked. I later attended a workshop with Tom Lohman who specializes in high-count segment pieces. Tom makes beautiful pieces with segment counts from hundreds to thousands. I joined a woodturning club in Houston called the Gulf Coast Woodturners Association. The club has many great turners, and I met a turner named Andy Chen through the club who provided help and encouragement. Andy makes beautiful, segmented pieces from Corian and wood. After working on segmented turning for a while I read a magazine article about the turnings of J Paul Fennell. J Paul specializes in hollow form turnings that are embellished with carving. His work fascinated me in the same way segmented turning did. His embellishments, particularly his lattice series, required some of the same math and geometry as segmented turning.
